The Faculty of Translation Studies, Linguistics and Cultural Studies of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Germersheim campus) is inviting applications for a three-year funded (50% time) position during which the candidate will work on her/his doctoral dissertation. The position is associated with the Chair of Multilingual and Transnational Post-Soviet Studies.

We are looking for an academic staff member / PhD candidate interested in doing doctoral research in one of the following fields, with a (not necessarily exclusive) focus on the Soviet Union and/or its predecessor or successor states and the ability to work with sources in at least one language other than Russian:

  • linguistic diversity and language policies
  • memory studies
  • visual studies
  • cultural sociology
  • cultural history

Your tasks:

  • The position is intended for candidates wishing to work on a doctoral dissertation; the tasks assigned will be those conducive to preparing a doctorate;
  • The successful candidate will be working independently on a doctoral project within the broad area of multilingual and transcultural studies, with a (not necessarily exclusive) geographical focus on the Soviet, pre-Soviet, and/or post-Soviet space, under the supervision of Professor Mischa Gabowitsch;
  • Independent research and presentation of research results at conferences and workshops;
  • Organizational activities (participation in organizing conferences and workshops, preparing funding applications for research projects, etc.)
  • Teaching (2 semester hours, i.e. 90 contact minutes per week)

Your profile:

In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 57 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate. She/he must

  • hold an academic degree qualifying the candidate to enrol in a doctoral program (master's degree or equivalent, completed by August 2024 at the latest);
  • be prepared and able to contribute to the faculty's program of research and teaching in a spirit of intellectual autonomy and teamwork
  • have excellent knowledge of English (excellent knowledge of German is desirable but not required
  • have excellent knowledge of a language spoken in the post-Soviet region other than Russian (excellent knowledge of Russian is desirable but not required)

The position is paid according to EG 13 TV-L and to be filled starting on 1 September 2024 for a period of three years.
